REVISED SOLAS REGULATION V/18 – AIS ANNUAL TESTING

REVISED SOLAS REGULATION V/18 – AIS ANNUAL TESTING

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) adopted amendments to SOLAS regulation V/18 following incorrect AIS data being transmitted. The amendments require an annual testing of the automatic identification system (AIS).

The IMO has adopted revised regulation of SOLAS V/18 regarding the approval, surveys and performance standards
of navigation systems and equipment and voyage data recorded. Through MSC.308(88) the Committee adopted
amendments to regulation 18 in order to require the annual testing of the automatic identification system (AIS) as
shown below:
“The automatic identification system (AIS) shall be
subjected to an annual test. The test shall be
conducted by an approved surveyor or an approved
testing or servicing facility. The test shall verify the
correct programming of the ship static information,
correct data exchange with connected sensors as well
as verifying the radio performance by radio
frequency measurement and on-air test using, e.g., a
Vessel Traffic Service (VTS). A copy of the test report
shall be retained on board the ship”.
Furthermore, guidelines have been issued on annual testing of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) through
MSC.1/Circ.1252.
APPLICABILITY
These amended requirements are applicable to vessels carrying AIS as outlined below:

 All passenger ships irrespective of tonnage;
 Cargo ships of 300 GT and above engaged on international voyages; and
 Cargo ships of 500 GT and above engaged on non-international voyages.

DATE IN FORCE
These amendments come into force on July 1st, 2012.
