AMENDMENTS TO MARPOL ANNEX VI REGULATION 1403 JULY 2012
The amendments have
been adopted to exempt
certain ships in the North
America ECA and the
United States Caribbean
Sea ECA under MARPOL
The Maritime Environmental Protection Committee (MEPC) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has adopted at MEPC 62 amendments to regulations 13 & 14 through Resolution MEPC.202(62).
The amendments include a new subparagraph 4 added to paragraph 4 in regulation 14 of MARPOL Annex VI as indicated below:
“Prior to 1 January 2020, the sulphur content of fuel oil referred to in paragraph 4 of this regulation shall not apply to ships operating in the North American area or the United States Caribbean Sea area defined in paragraph 3, built on or before 1 August 2011 that are powered by propulsion boilers that were not originally designed for continued operation on marine distillate fuel or natural gas”.
This amendment comes in force on January 1, 2013 and is applicable to existing steamships that:
operate within the North America ECA or the US Caribbean ECA; and
built on or before January 1, 2011; and
powered by propulsion boilers that were not originally designed for continued operation on
marine distillate fuel or natural gas.
